In the whirlwind of life as a working mom to a lively 1.5-year-old and a stepmom to an 11-year-old and 14-year-old, the current season holds a distinct theme for me – it's all about rest, recharge, and restoration. Navigating through a year and a half of chronic sleep deprivation with a little one has made every moment of rest and sleep feel like an exquisite luxury. In this blog post, I want to share my personal journey of prioritizing rest and embracing various yoga techniques to regulate my nervous system, all while managing the chaos of motherhood.

The Importance of Prioritizing Rest and Nervous System Regulation:

Having experienced the transformative effects of rest and quality sleep, I've come to understand their pivotal role in overall well-being. Chronic sleep deprivation, a constant companion in my journey as a mom, urged me to prioritize these essential aspects of self-care. When I am not in balance I have a difficult time managing all of the demands and staying calm and collected in challenging moments. Overall I just feel happier and more like myself when I have had an opportunity to rest and relax. Additionally, understanding the significance of regulating the nervous system has become a cornerstone of my approach, especially concerning pain management and healing. Constantly allowing our bodies to restore and regulate holds a multitude of benefits, from emotional well-being to enhanced immunity, reduced pain, and an overall improvement in mood and productivity (see previous posts to get more in depth about this part)

Implementing Yoga Techniques in a Hectic Life:

Today, I want to take a more personal twist and share how I strive to integrate these rejuvenating yoga techniques into my daily routine as a busy mom. But let's be real – life isn't always picture-perfect, and sometimes, I find solace in a Netflix binge to unwind. No regrets there – I've learned that those moments contribute to my emotional, mental, and physical well-being too.

Examples from My Daily Life:

  1. Bedtime Body Scan and Breath Countdown:

  • In the quiet moments of bedtime with my son, I practice a soothing body scan followed by a 10-breath countdown. This simple yet effective routine aids in a quicker transition to sleep during wake-ups.

  1. Quick Legs Up the Wall Breaks:

  • Whether between patients in the treatment room or on the living room floor while my son plays, I take 5 minutes for a legs-up-the-wall pose. It's a swift recharge for both my body and mind.

  1. On-the-Go Belly Breathing:

  • Throughout the day, if I sense my nervous system veering off balance, I consciously engage in belly breathing with lengthened exhales. It's a portable practice that I can seamlessly incorporate into any situation.

  1. Non-Negotiable Movement:

  • Recognizing movement as a cornerstone of my life, I've made it a non-negotiable to get out in nature for a walk if structured exercise or a gym session isn't feasible. It's a refreshing break that contributes to my overall well-being.

In the midst of the chaotic and joyous moments of motherhood, I've discovered that prioritizing rest and integrating yoga techniques into my routine are essential for my overall wellness. Whether it's a calming body scan, a rejuvenating legs-up-the-wall pose, focused breathing, or a walk, these practices serve as anchors in the whirlwind of my bustling life. And on those days when Netflix wins, I've learned to embrace the downtime without guilt. Remember, in the pursuit of balance, every small effort counts.
